GROUNDWATER MODELING FOR CENTRAL BROWARD REGIONAL PARK

CLIENTS: EDSA
BROWARD COUNTY PARKS & RECREATIONS

LOCATION: FT. LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA

ESTIMATED CONSTRUCTION COST: $10,000,000

PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SCOPE OF WORK:

Scope of work included Modflow groundwater modeling to calculate the lake draw down effects on wetlands, and to support irrigation design for a SFWMD Consumptive Water Use permit. Consumptive Water Use permit was obtained successfully for this 109 acre park in early 2007. Software used was Visual Modflow groundwater modeling commercial package owned and operated by our hydro-geologist, Mr. Herman Taube, P.G. The groundwater modeling and environmental permitting effort was successful including several monitoring wells that were installed by the well driller to close out the water use permit with SFWMD.

MODFLOW is the USGS’s three-dimensional (3D) finite-difference groundwater model. MODFLOW is considered an international standard for simulating and predicting groundwater modeling conditions and groundwater/surface-water interactions.

Originally developed and released solely as a groundwater-flow simulation code when first published in 1984, MODFLOW’s modular structure has provided a robust framework for integration of additional simulation capabilities that build on and enhance its original scope. The family of MODFLOW-related programs now includes capabilities to simulate coupled groundwater/surface-water systems, solute transport, variable-density flow (including saltwater), aquifer-system compaction and land subsidence, parameter estimation, and groundwater modeling management.

The current core version of MODFLOW is MODFLOW-2005 v.1.11.00 &MODFLOW-2005 is the standard version of MODFLOW supported by the USGS Office of Groundwater and is the most stable and well-tested version of the code.
