CLIENTS:
Miami-Dade County Expressway Authority (MDX)
HNTB (General Consultant to MDX)
APCTE (Drainage Sub-Consultant to HNTB)
LOCATION:
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FLORIDA
ESTIMATED PROJECT CONSTRUCTION COST:
$10,000,000
PROJECT DESCRIPTION / SCOPE OF WORK:
Performed XP-SWMM flood control modeling and created a volumetric analysis report utilizing Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resource Management (DERM) C-4 existing and future conditions models for the 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 year storm events. Widening of the 836 off-ramp close to Miami-Dade International Airport (MIA) requires the Miami-Dade County Expressway Authority (MDX) to propose filling in a portion of the adjacent Blue Lagoon. A total of four scenarios were analyzed including (1) Current conditions as it is today (2) MDX filling in 6 Acres within their right-of-way (3) MDX filling in all of their right-of-way, or roughly 25 Acres, and finally (4) a cumulative scenario of all properties who have fill rights including MDX to fill in the lagoon within their property boundaries as requested by Carlos DeRojas, P.E. and Eduardo Lopez, P.E. who work with SFWMD Surface Water Regulation Department in West Palm Beach, FL. A comparison of hydrographs and tabular results was reported for all 40 XP-SWMM model runs and a final conclusion of a negligible flood stage impact to the C-4 Basin’s critical nodes was provided. Some critical nodes examined include the Cities of Sweetwater and Doral located just west of Miami, Florida.
